Logs to Lumber

Callahan Sawmills uses a Woodmizer LT70 to saw lumber at a production scale. Below are the most common species sawn for lumber.

White Oak

White Oak is a very common oak in the pacific northwest. If you ask around, this species of tree is somewhat looked down upon. Once the kids are grown up and there's no use for that tire swing anymore, you may be looking to get that big eye sore out of your yard. But with the experience I have, I can tell you that there is beauty under that bark.

Tan Oak

In the late 1900's, Tan Oak was perceived as a less marketable hardwood but the species has become a much more desirable wood. In pure stands, Tan Oak grows slender up to 125ft tall with tight knots.

Madrone

Here in Douglas County, Madrone is most commonly used for firewood. Its difficult to find a straight Madrone Log because the tree can grow so jagged. But when sawn correctly, Madrone can produce a wonderful product. The outer "whiter" wood can bring forth a clear, S grade lumber board. Then continue diving deeper into the log where you'll begin to find the knots and also the deep reds, that are hidden in the heart.
